Engine air precleaners can be used as a more effective way to extend the life of an air filter. They are designed to keep contaminant from entering the air intake system of the engine. Engines that are used in dusty environments will require more maintenance. The more dust that there is in the surrounding environment, the more frequently the air filter will need replacing. Therefor resulting in more down time. It is very important that the air filter is monitored regularly and maintained as a clogged filter reduces fuel economy, power and the life of the engine components. Air precleaners are an easy and efficient way of dramatically increasing the life of the air filter and therefore increase equipment productivity.

Dirt can enter the engine in many different ways but the most likely and potentially the most harmful way is through the air intake system.
Airborne debris ranging from 10 to 100 microns in size are the most damaging to engines. To put that into perspective, one micron is equal to 0.000039ths of an inch. The most destructive particles in this size range are silicates. Silicates are found in sand, making them very commonly found on sites where engines are working. When silicates are exposed to the temperatures an engine operates at, they will crystallise to a diamond like strength. Even the tiniest amount of debris entering the engine can cause wear on cylinder surfaces, rings and bearings. Worn engine components can allow oil to enter other parts of the engine, thus resulting in excessive oil consumption. Obviously the air filter is there to filter out as much debris as possible but regular changing or cleaning of the filter can also be damaging to the engine. Changing the air filter itself can result in a large amount of debris passing into the engine. Not having to change the air filters as often will result in less contamination entering the engine.

A precleaner is a basic but extremely effective piece of equipment. It starts with the contaminated air entering the precleaner. Firstly it penetrates through a finely punched, mesh prescreen. This removes any of the larger debris from the air intake. From there the air then streams down through fixed vanes, this causes the air to spin which in turn activates a rotor. As the rotor spins it creates a force strong enough to push the contamination (insects, dirt, dust etc.) out of the air stream through discharge ports at the bottom of the unit. The clean air that then flows into the air filter will be up to 90% more pure.
